Child Protection and Care

Kasese District’s population is 853,831 people, with 54.6% being children (slightly below the national child population of 55.5%). In a country where the child population is more than half the national population, protection and care for children is paramount.

The ‘Bana Thukule Ndeke’ (Responsible Upbringing)​

Through this initiative, FFC contributes toward protecting children from abuse and exploitation by equipping:

  • Pre-adolescents aged 9-12
  • Teenagers aged 13-17

with skills for safe transition to adulthood and prevention of risky behaviors among in-school and out-of-school children.

  • Navigating life challenges
  • Building positive relationships
  • Making informed decisions
  • Traditional child protection practices (self-care, protection, survival skills, values)
  • Hands-on skills: kitchen gardens (smart agricultural practices), personal and household hygiene, briquette making, cooking meals

Rationale: While formidable work has been done with children, parents need a systematic parenting intervention. Child neglect and abuse is largely blamed on poor parenting.

Approach:

  • Systematic parenting intervention implemented alongside Bana Thukule Ndeke
  • Based on 2025 evaluation findings and Needs Assessment report
  • Partnership with Sub County Community Development Officers
  • Training using the Government of Uganda Parenting Manual

Post-Training Support:

  • Graduates are meant to form parenting support groups for:
    • Continued mentorship
    • Coaching
    • Social support during their parenting journey

Early Childhood Development (ECD): Families are encouraged to strengthen care for young children to boost development and attachment
